Amir Hussain is Professor of Cognitive Computing Science at the University of Stirling in Scotland. He obtained his BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering (with the highest 1st Class Honours, with distinction) and PhD (in novel neural network architectures and algorithms for real-world applications), both from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK, in 1992 and 1997 respectively. Following a Research Fellowship at the University of Paisley (now West of Scotland), UK (1996-98), and a Research Lectureship at the University of Dundee, UK (1998-2000), he joined the University of Stirling in Scotland, in 2000, where he is currently Professor and founding Director of the Cognitive Big Data Informatics (CogBID) Laboratory.

He is founding Editor-in-Chief of the Cognitive Computation journal (published by Springer Nature, the world�s leading publisher of journals and books in the Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) sector, with a 5-yr ISI-SCI impact factor: 1.73 http://springer.com/12559) and the BMC journal of Big Data Analytics (published by BioMed Central (BMC), the world�s leading open-access journal publisher: http://bdataanalytics.com). He is founding Series Editor for the Springer Book Series on Socio-Affective Computing and SpringBriefs on Cognitive Computation. He also serves on the Editorial Board of a number of other world-leading journals including, the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (ISI-SCI Impact Factor = 4.2) and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Magazine (ISI-SCI Impact Factor: 2.6)

His research interests are cross-disciplinary & industry focused and include: next generation brain-inspired multi-modal cognitive technology for solving complex real world problems, including cognitive multi-modal hearing systems, sentic computing, multilingual sentiment and opinion mining and natural language processing, medical and social multi-media Big Data analytics, manifold-based learning, dimensionality reduction and visualization, personalized and preventative (e and m) healthcare, and medical informatics engineering, agent based complex autonomous systems modeling and control, more natural multi-modal human computer interaction, assistive technology & related clinical research. His pioneering ongoing research on next-generation multi-modal cognitive hearing systems and cognitive autonomous systems control, has received significant national and international media coverage (e.g. recently in the BBC, Herald, the Sunday Times and The Conversation:

He has (co)authored nearly 300 publications (including over a dozen Books, around 100 journal papers, and the world�s first research monographs on the multi-disciplinary areas of: cognitively-inspired audio-visual speech filtering, sentic computing, and cognitive agent based computing). Since 2003, he has attracted over US $2million research grants income, as Principal Investigator, from national and European research councils, local and international charities and industry. He has supervised more than 20 PhDs to-date, and serves as an International Advisor to various Governmental Higher Education and Research Councils, Universities and Companies. He is a Visiting Professor at several research leading research Universities and Laboratories, including Oxford (Computational Neuroscience Lab), Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool & Anhui Universities (China) and Taibah University (Saudi Arabia). He regularly acts as invited Keynote Speaker, and has organized (as General/Organizing Chair) over 50 leading international Conferences to-date, including IEEE WCCI, SSCI, IJCNN, BICS and INNS Big Data Conference series. He is an invited member of several world-leading IEEE technical committees, including the IEEE Systems Man and Cybernetics (SMC) Technical Committee on Cognitive Computing, the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Emergent Technologies Technical Committee, the IEEE CIS Education Multimedia, and Pre-College Activities Committees.

He is IEEE Chapter Chair of the IEEE UK & Ireland Industry Applications Society Chapter, and founding co-Chair of the INNS (International Neural Networks Society) Big Data Section. He is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (HEA), and elected Senior Fellow of the Brain Sciences Foundation (USA).
